"Yoga on the Mountain!"
Welcome to Yoga!
Please read this information, particularly if this is your first experience of Yoga or if this is your first time in any of the groups listed below.
Yoga is a physical and metaphysical practice whose ancient origins lie in the prehistoric Indian subcontinent. The word comes from the root –yuj which means to yoke or to unite – and it is from the union of mind, body, spirit and breath that the work of yoga proceeds.
Yoga comes in many forms and traditions. The type we practice here is a form of hatha yoga derived from Tibetan sources. It stresses the integration of mind and body ~ breath and body. It may be different from other forms of yoga you have engaged in previously.
The goal of our practice is to become stronger and more flexible in equal measures; to become more aware of our bodies – their strengths and weaknesses, their histories of wear and injury – so that we may work to build upon what we now possess to become more focused in our minds and more centered in our bodies – and to become more present in the world each day. And, particularly as we age, we work to maintain the stability and balance which will help prevent injury and keep us functioning well.
Yoga is NOT a competitive sport. Every person has a unique body type and a unique history of stresses and strains on that body. Our goal is not to have everyone doing the same posture in exactly the same way at the same time, but for each of us to strive and to progress into each posture we attempt and to always work on what we need, starting from every moment.
We inhabit a society which encourages us to live in our minds and not our bodies. We are particularly encouraged to disregard pain, or to think that physical pain is a sign of improvement. In yoga, we will encourage you to pay close attention to your body and to listen to its messages. These messages come in the form of sensations, images, emotions, impressions and thoughts. Please pay attention to your messages of pain or discomfort as you move through your yoga practice. These are messages your body is sending, trying to tell you that its current limits to a certain activity or posture have been met and that – for whatever reason – you do not currently have the ability to move in a particular way or to fully attain the posture you may be trying. Listen! Listen to your body! When you get these messages, we ask you to move away from the point of pain or discomfort and ask your yoga facilitator for help in achieving the posture or for an adaptation that may better suit your current abilities. With time and practice, you may very well improve!
Yoga can stretch your mind, your heart and your emotions as well as your body. We hope that your practice of yoga with us will be a growing experience for you.
